About us

The weaving worksop "Agnythes" was created by Maria Gonidou in 1987. Back then the main production was homeware mainly in traditional designs, and also tapestries in designs and colours of her own. Natural dyes from leaves, roots, and flowers from Greek plants, like madderwort, daisies, onion skins, krokus, walnut, lichen etc.

In 1995 the workshop was moved to Nafplio, and Maria started designing hand woven fabric for the creation of women’s scarves and shawls using cellulose acetate, wool, cotton and linen. Maria chooses the raw material, the colours and the quality of all the woven products in her shop. All the woven material in the workshop is designed by Maria Gonidou and is her spiritual property.

All fabrics are being woven in Nafplio by Maria using Greek traditional techniques on the hand operated traditional loom. Basic principles for the creation of each hand woven material are: a) the quality of the raw material b) the usage of traditional techniques to fulfil customers’ contemporary needs (material, design, useability) c) the quality of the unique sensation given by quality hand-made work (time and way of weaving). Later, the women’s range was increased by adding different sizes to shawls and scarves, and men’s ties and scarves came along.

Our customers come from all over the world: USA, Canada, Europe etc. and they choose with Maria’s help and care the handwoven material that suits them most or gifts for their friends and family. They have the opportunity to see the loom and the weaving techniques in the area where the woven fabrics are being exhibited and sold. Our work is being praised by our customers as well as the Greek press.

Our future plans include making clothes like cardigans, jackets and evening tops out of our hand made fabrics.

All our products can be used all year long, for morning or evening appearances depending on the customer’s mood and taste. We offer you the art of weaving with love and contemporary style.
